The Foundation of a Digital World
My workflow begins with a deep dive into the project's creative brief. This initial phase involves understanding the story, the characters, and the desired emotional tone. I start by gathering references—everything from architectural styles and natural landscapes to lighting and color palettes. This research is crucial for building a solid foundation. Using these references, I create a series of mood boards and initial sketches to establish the key visual elements. This represents the conceptual phase, where the core ideas of the environment are born and validated, ensuring the final design aligns perfectly with the project's vision.
Blocking and Prototyping
Once the concept is solid, I move into the 3D space. Using a combination of simple geometry and rough asset placement, I create a "blockout" of the scene. This stage is all about establishing the major forms, scale, and composition. I focus on creating a clear visual hierarchy and guiding the viewer's eye through the environment. I prototype different camera angles and key character placements to ensure the layout supports the intended action and storytelling. This is a highly iterative process, where I rapidly test and refine the spatial relationships between different elements until the scene feels balanced and purposeful I utilize Blender's node-based material system to create and customize shaders, paying close attention to color, roughness, metallic properties, and normal details. I also leverage Blender's UV unwrapping tools to ensure textures are applied accurately and effectively to the 3D geometry.
Detailing and Asset Integration
With the blockout approved, I transition to the detailing phase. This is where the scene truly comes to life. I begin to integrate final assets, either created by myself or sourced from a team of asset artists. This involves carefully placing props, sculpting terrain, and adding architectural details that build on the initial concept. Texturing and material work become a major focus, as I meticulously apply and refine shaders to give every surface a sense of history and realism. I pay close attention to environmental storytelling, adding small details like scattered debris, worn-out textures, or subtle foliage to suggest the history and purpose of the space.
